Species Information

Summary:
Features include tiny, elliptic or circular, black fruitbodies with the spore-bearing surface flat, leathery consistency, absent stem, erumpent growth on Douglas-fir stem, and microscopic characters including 4-spored asci.
Microscopic:
spores 14-17 x 4-6 microns, elliptic, colorless, continuous [aseptate], with 2 droplets; asci 4-spored, 78-95 x 8-10 microns, clavate; paraphyses "longer than the asci and agglutinated at the tips to form an epithecium", filiform [thread-like], colorless, septate, branched; conidia 15-22 x 5-6 microns, falcate [sickle-shaped], continuous, colorless; conidiophores 10-30 x 2-3 microns, "simple, cylindric, phialidic"

Habitat and Range

Habitat
erumpent, single, gregarious, on stem of Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas-fir), the conidial state first described from a blister rust canker of Pinus monticola (Western White Pine); "associated with die-back in semimature trees and also with small cankers in young trees", one collection "found on callus growth around a graft"
